CAN DO TIP Week #50 Spring into Action!
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up” …Ecclesiastes 3:1-22
Springtime has always been my favorite season. I love to witness new life springing before my eyes – budding tree blossoms, tiny green delicate blades of grass, and even the energized “spring” in people’s steps as they walk along the concrete next to squirrels that seem to glide up and down the trees excited for the newness in the air.
As a fitness trainer, I enjoy witnessing the transformation of my fitness clients in body, mind and spirit. Whether I’ve asked him to do just 1 more pushup when it appears as though he’s just about to drop or whether I’ve asked her to do 1 more overhead press just when she felt her arms were so weak and wobbly that she couldn’t get the weight past her shoulders; the funny part is, more often than not; they do accomplish the task.
As a motivational tactic, I tell my clients that they are ALWAYS right. “If you think you CAN’T do it, then you’re always right. But if you think you CAN, well then you’re right again!” The basic point I’m making is that transformation (the process of changing in mind, form or appearance) involves a system of beliefs. For instance, if you believe without a shadow of a doubt that being fit, healthy and energetic will help you transcend into a happier, more enriching, and fulfilling life; then the choices that you make will tend to reflect that belief; literally securing your foundation for whatever is to come despite the issues of life. If you believe you only live once and that we all have to die anyway so why not live it up, the same holds true – your choices and its outcomes will reflect that mentality.
Here’s the bottom line: Transcendence is about change. Over the years I’ve learned that although you can’t always change people and circumstances – you can change yourself and how you react to them. In life, resistance, sabotage and disruption is par for the course. Not only should we expect it, we should welcome it. In fact, look at it as your opportunity to grow. Go ahead… tell “brother” resistance, “sister sabotage” and their “cousin” disruption” to come on inside and sit down. Even bring them a cup of chamomile tea and relax. But don’t get too comfortable because before long, they’ll outlast their welcome and you’ll have to tell them as they say, “get to packin’!”
This spring, take the time to discover what you believe about yourself and your circumstances. Are you inviting resistance, sabotage and disruption to stay way past their welcome? Change your mind – you have that right – and send them packing. How? By believing that you can!
